Not everyone is felled by such demands though. In adidas gazelle Alexander Chee's novel Queen of the Night (2016), fictional 19th-Century opera singer Lilliet Berne enters a Parisian ball in a "creation of pink taffeta and gold silk". Pausing by a mirror, she is horrified to realise that it looks awfully garish. A consummate performer aware of her own stage presence, she hides in the crowd and eventually finds a set of dukes with an unusual taste for "returning women from an evening in their company with their dresses cut to pieces by sabers and for supplying those women afterward with more dresses in return".
At the time, they'd ordered the prints in multiples in order to share among friends or perhaps to be used in marriage bids, and still had copies to spare. Then, adidas ultra boost in the late 1990s, Western art audiences were introduced to African master photographers Malick Sidibe and Seydou Keita whose images, very similar to the aunties', were transformed from intimate personal mementos into large-size and in the case of Keita, nearly life-size adidas shoes art objects. I returned to my cherished boxes of photos and began to look at them anew.
With my discovery of Keita I began to collect passionately led very much by a love of fashion, and by a desire to make new sense of the world through the lead of my heroine in Edinburgh. It was the 1970s when I went to Edinburgh, and the images of Africa fed to us at that time swung from two poles: National Geographic, which arrived in its brown-paper cover, suggesting something out of adidas zx flux bounds, which was manifest in the photographs baring African women's bodies.
Then there were Ebony and Jet magazines, evidence of another continent black US celebrities at Independence celebrations, "hot" African-inspired fashions for the catwalk, commercial ads featuring the regalia of pre-colonial kings and queens. This Africa was a heaving, glorious thing, like the chests of actors LaVar Burton and Cicely Tyson in the 1970s TV series Roots. By the 1980s this Africa was replaced with images of poverty and war. I've come to realise that if you slow down to read them, they tell their own stories, different from those Western magazines, whatever their political position, where the endless, brightly-dressed women are hard to discern under the surface of their presentation as archetypal mothers, sages, anthropologised tradition-keepers and nudes.
More resonances cling to tartan than perhaps any other fabric. It's a stirring visual expression of both history and geography, as well as innovative design and self-expression. "There are many ways in which you can make a tartan distinctive and imbue it with personal adidas samba or collective meaning," says Rosie Waine, William Grant Foundation research fellow at National Museums Scotland. "Throughout its history, tartan has been used to express political viewpoints, as well as familial, regional and national identities. It has been viewed as tame and conservative by some; bold, brilliant and radical by others."Far from being a dyed-in-the-wool slice of historic Caledonian kitsch, tartan design is very much alive and well in the 21st Century as evidenced by the stream of new examples recorded each year at the Scottish Register of Tartans. And the range of inspirations is as diverse as the designs. |
